Nina’s volunteering Thailand Trip

Hi, my name is Nina, I’m 20 years old and I currently study Film and Television Production at the University of York. This summer I am hoping to go to Thailand to teach English within disadvantaged areas and work in Elephant sanctuaries. In Thailand the suppression of women is still predominant within their culture, women are expected to marry and have children with little freedom over their future. Teaching young girls, and boys English provides them with greater career opportunities and the ability to work abroad. Helping children by providing them with an education doesn’t limit their future ambition,  a more educated generation should tackle the misogynistic and suppressive expectations that are still prominent in their society. 

I am currently undergoing a teacher training programme so I am a competent English teacher in Thailand. The money raised will go towards my flights and travel insurance with the remainder being donated to the schools and orphanages that I will be attending. 

To contribute towards my future career aspirations, I intend to create a documentary exploring the culture in Thailand, and the benefits of learning English. I intend to look at this predominantly from a female prospective as their culture is primarily male lead. I’m hoping this documentary will allow me to spread awareness about the inequalities still present in their community, which will hopefully inspire help and change.
