Gaza is a war torn strip of the Occupied Palestinian Territories that has long been under Siege. Having suffered through three wars in the last ten years its citizens have been subject to numerous human rights' violations imposed by Israeli military occupation. Even outside times of war life is dire, with blockade of the land, sea and air, restricting the movement of food, basic resources and opportunities for development.
Despite all these obstacles many Palestinians show an unparalleled resilience towards self-determination.
Gaza has a highly educated civilian population, a substantial proportion of which are university graduates. Under the harsh economic climate this is met with little reward: according to the World Bank they have the lowest rate of employment in the World.
A substantial proportion of unemployed graduates are men and women interested in journalism and the humanities.
This is where you come in. The current project titled 'New Gaza' is an online paper that is hosted as a joint project between the UK-based non-governmental organisation Al-Noor Foundation and Althorayya media organisation within Gaza. Formed by a team including writers and editors from the famous book 'Gaza writes back' we aim to design a paper employing young writers, journalists and artists living in Gaza. Our aim is to publish articles and photo-essays about life in Gaza, including both the harsh realities, and the personal stories of hope and innovation that are being born in the hidden corners of life under occupation. As well as providing news to the outside World directly from Gaza, this project aims to give opportunities for young literary talents to develop their skills whilst being able to earn a living and also give something back to their country.
The contributions you make will go directly towards employing and providing resources to our young writers, editors and artists engaging in our project.
