New Signage for Obama Magnet

In the Fall of 2017, the best elementary school in Mississippi  was  renamed Barack Obama Magnet Elementary School.  Its former name, Jefferson Davis Magnet School,  was not representative of the ideals for which our school stands, nor was it representative of our scholars. The school PTA led the charge to change the school's name by organizing a democratic process by which scholars, parents, and staff could submit potential names. Students then campaigned for the most popular submissions and even held a rally to present their very convincing, research-based arguments as to why their candidate was the best choice. In the end, scholars, parents, teachers, and staff voted overwhelmingly for the new name to be Barack Obama Magnet Elementary School. 
We have received so many letters and emails from people here in Jackson and all around the United States congratulating our student body for their monumental effort! We are so grateful for your support!


                                                Now we need your help! 

To complete the renaming process, we must reconstruct the name signage on the exterior and interior of the school.  Permanent construction, the kind that lasts for generations, is expensive, but the value it can deliver for centuries to our community is unlimited. For this project, we are only relying on the financial assistance of our school partners, parents, and potential supporters like you. We are looking to raise $50,000 in funds to complete our project.

Barack Obama Signage Costs: 

$20,000- Demolition of existing area, installation of new concrete, electrical, carpentry, translucent panels,                       signage, and construction contingency of 5%. 
$10,000- All masonry (brick) materials and labor
$5000-     Cornerstone for the new name.
$3000-     Indoor school signage. 
$2000-    Shade flags for the outdoor classroom.
$10,000- Personalized school mats for the hallways.



 
Our goal is to have our new signage ready for the first day of school of the 2018-2019 school year. That's right! August 2018. We know that with your help we can get it done
