Nepal Fund for Rural Village

The two villages that I would like to serve are not currently being supported by the government or local NGO’s in a significant, life sustaining way, because there is so much current need and these locations are difficult to access. The goal of this project is to build two, earth-quake, resilient facilities which can function as a school, shelter, and community center.

The Earthquakes of April 25, 2015 (7.8)  and May 12, 2015 (7.3), and the following 150+ aftershocks ruptured the entire landscape, devastating communities, historical and religious landmarks and numerous Nepali people’s way of life. This natural disaster left their world and my small place, in it permanently altered. There is a dire need for outside, seed support to initiate the recovery of these highly resilient, positive people.

Please read Update 1 if you would like to know the story behind my involvement in this endeavor.

A few days after the earthquake, Purna, a native friend from Sanabangthali in the Kavre district, and I, took necessary food and tarps to meet the immediate survival needs of the villagers. Currently they have tarps for shelter and food to last until the monsoon passes and crops are available. The imminent monsoon will bring additional damage to the remaining structures within the village. The village homes that are still “standing” crumble with each after shock, which continue till today and are predicted to last for up to two years. These buildings are unsafe and will most likely be washed away with the torrential rains. Many homes and people will not survive the monsoon season. The needs are changing constantly and people on the ground are the only ones who can intervene by providing immediate targeted relief. During the days I was there, the village leaders and I determined that one essential mid- range recovery project would be to build a school/community center. This support would bring  a sense of security and hope to the people. Education is critical for the village people’s survival. The young people often leave the village after they have been minimally educated to work in the city or another country, enabling them to support those remaining. Prior to this disaster, 400 children attended a village high school.  Each day, they walked up to 2-3 hours each way to attend school.  This prevented children from participating in farm work, indicating that the older people value education, ensuring their survival. They compensate for those attending school by doing an additional portion of work required to gather food for sustenance and profit. A school is desperately needed to provide hope for the future, the foundational education required for long term village sustenance and as a temporary shelter as the community rebuilds personal dwellings.

If the initial project is successful other friends, Jatin and Thakur Rijal from the Bagmati Zone, Dist Dhading VDC. Bhumesthan Ward No. 7 Ghale Gharti Gau Nepal have requested our help. They are facing the same circumstances and need to rebuild homes and their demolished school, Shree Lila Kali Madhyamic Bidhyalaya.

The village leaders have already completed the plans for this structure, which will be built with corrugated tin (lightweight!), bamboo (bendy! plentiful! local!) and pine (resilient and local!). Please view update 2 (coming soon!) that shows the plans, costs and schedule for completion.
