Nama Farm: Food Justice, Healing, & Arts

Donation protected
We are boldly moving forward to purchase a center and barn with outbuildings on 4+ acres in Cabot, VT.  Nama Farm is creating a center in service of cultural and ecological biodiversity, coming together across the lines of age, race, gender, and class - a center with a purpose and a plan far beyond our own selves. With our savings and the financial support of our loving family (with more gifts to come) we made an offer on a beautiful property, and went to the bank. Our offer was accepted. We have received our letter of pre-approval, and now we need your help to meet our closing costs  so we may make our healing farm Dreams a Reality!

OUR STORY:
Nate and Ama have been partners in life and work for over 15 years. Our time living in Somerville, Cambridge & Dorchester MA, and volunteering on farms across the nation with WWOOF, have shaped the way we experience issues of food justice and economic inequity.

We answered an inner call to come to Vermont and work with elders and young people here, connecting urban and rural populations through farming, education, and the arts.

We've lived in the state of Vermont since September 2009, and are in our 10th year of farming in Vermont using a variety of organic and biodynamic practices. We've been migrating through northern VT in search of the place that calls us; starting new gardens and improving soils at each new farm site. This year alone we are growing our crops at four very different sites! We moved to Montpelier in 2018 to be part of a vibrant cultural scene, and now we are ready to consciously steward the land in one place, and put down our deep roots.

Ama is: a Farmer, Fiber Artist and Chef of Black-Scottish/Lithuanian-Irish lineage. She curates diverse artists for our "Salon Black Walnut" arts and cultural evenings, and makes homegrown jars of Nama's Farmhouse Preserves.

Nate is: a Massage Therapist, Farmer, and Writer of Russian-Jewish/German-Scottish lineage. He has a practice with longtime private clients and beyond Vermont, and is employed at the Stowe Mountain Lodge, now known as The Spa at Spruce Peak.

OUR VISION FOR THE CENTER INCLUDES:
Food Justice Education:
- Culturally appropriate and earth-respecting foods grown and prepared with love.
- Homestead trainings: life skills like seed saving and pantry building for the people to survive and thrive in our changing climate.
- Cooperative economics, land use workshops and discussions of land access and homestead creation.
-  Place-based nature education (day programs) with farmer field trips and learning residencies.

Racial Justice & BIPOC* Representation:
-Nama hosts "Salons of Arts and Culture" with BIPOC artists in residence stemming from many traditions.
- Visiting artists come for events & teach workshops on site and across the state in collaboration with our regional friends and diverse allies.
- Culture: Cultural appreciation and social exchange for our shared humanity. A human family of guest artists across world cultures and mediums coming together in our salons with members of the local community.
-*BIPOC means Black, Indigenous, People of Color

Healing Retreat:
-  A center for therapeutic rest & relief from inner city stressors and intense situations.
- Collaborations with other organizations serving BIPOC and our many allies in Vermont and beyond.
- A facility for holistic healing with residency programs at Nama Farm
- A place in Northern Vermont for BIPOC and allies to take time to write, to teach, to learn, or to just be.

Agricultural Activity in Community:
- Nama is a working vegetable farm, supporting young people in growing into adults experienced in the joy of farming and building Community, with lots of fun & hands on the land.
- Nama Farm provides organic, biodynamic produce to the local community at affordable prices.
- Education in areas of family budgeting, natural building & human scale off-grid farming.

ABOUT THE PROPERTY:
We fell in love with this Land because it has the elements and infrastructure to support our Vision.

The Land:  4+ Acres, three ponds, chicken coops, guest cabins & a big barn with a workshop or enough space for small animal husbandry.  There are several apple trees, ample open land to plant crops and transplant our fruit and nut trees, teach seed saving & grow organic veggies from seed to seed.  There is space for workshops on gardening and construction.  The paths in the forest by the ponds are open and winding and invite meditation and ease.

The House: Two bedrooms, large spaces for workshops & gatherings, movement & massage space, and a kitchen for Ama to teach life skills, culinary arts, event & meal planning,  household budgeting, and creating & keeping a bulk pantry.

We also fell in love with this property because frankly, we could vividly see ourselves being married under the apple tree by the largest pond this fall!
