Help Mahalo

Hello Pet Lovers,

We are the Banny family and we are requesting your financial assistance in helping our 4-year old beloved Shih Tzu, Mahalo. Mahalo joined our family in the summer of 2012 as a small puppy. Mahalo as a puppy was very friendly, vivacious and easy-going. He was a welcomed addition to our family and bonded with all of us. However, one week we left our puppy with a trusted friend while going on a family vacation. Soon after, Mahalo's personality changed completely. Our once friendly and trusting puppy became fearful, timid, and would wince whenever anyone approached him. He was no longer the friendly and outgoing puppy that he had been before. As the years passed, Mahalo's personality became even more anxious. He very rarely showed signs of affectionate, he would spend hours alone in a corner and would start yapping hysterically for no reason. Mahalo shied away from other people, other dogs and ultimately we have only been able to use one groomer in our town because Mahalo became extremely aggressive if anyone touched him. Mahalo's PTSD is also taking a toll on his physical health. Since Mahalo is extremely afraid of other humans he can not be groomed often. He can only be groomed under sedation or by one groomer in all of our city of Charlotte who only works sporadically.

In Oct. 2015, Mahalo became very ill. He began to shake uncontrollably and would hide from all of us. We took him to the vet, who also cares for our other dogs. After examining him thoroughly, our vet advised that Mahalo may be suffering from PTSD. We later learned that the trusted friend we left Mahalo with had abused him for the entire week when he was a puppy. A trusted confidante told us Mahalo had even been kicked across the room by this "friend". We were shocked and dismayed especially when the friend confirmed that he had hurt Mahalo in an attempt to discipline him.

As a result of this abuse in his puppyhood, Mahalo suffered emotional stress and has never fully recovered. Recently things have become worse for Mahalo. He attempted to bite a child and growls for no reason and has become even more of a loner. We spoke to a dog behavioral therapist, The Dog Wizard of North Carolina, who advised that under treatment Mahalo's PTSD could be managed and possibly cured by attending sessions at their facility. We have very limited vet coverage for Mahalo which does not cover behaviorial therapy. Unfortunately, the out-of-pocket cost of this treatment is very high for our family.

We no longer want Mahalo to suffer. We want him to lead a happy and healthy doghood especially since he is approaching his senior years. It breaks our heart to know that animal cruelty affected our dog. We are asking for $1600 in order for Mahalo to receive this much needed behavioral therapy.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for wanting to help Mahalo. He truly is a kind and wonderful dog despite his illness.
