Veteran Cincinnati Police Officer Kevin Brown was working an off duty uniformed detail for the nationwide grocery chain, The Kroger Company. He is paid by the grocery to deter and or apprehend any shoplifters.

A group of juveniles entered the store when Officer Brown was working the detail and several of them began stealing numerous items from within the store. One 11 yr old female juvenile  in particular, loaded up a backpack full of stolen goods valued at $53 dollars and tried to walk out the front door. Officer Brown tried to confront her and told her to stop, but she ignored his commands and continued to walk away. Officer Brown deployed his taser and arrested the juvenile shoplifter. Unfortunately, several others in her group who had stolen items as well, got away.  Officer Brown can be heard on his body camera empathizing to the juvenile that she was wrong and that he didn’t want to have to tase her and wished she would’ve listened to his commands to stop. The juvenile and her friends made it a habit of stealing from this particular Kroger’s in the past.

Officer Brown is a father. He expressed his opinion to her of how important it is for juveniles such as herself to not steal and break the law, as it will only snowball into her later years of life. You can hear his concern and compassion for her as he speaks to her inside the office while completing the arrest report. He also made reference as to this is why some stores have to close because of the profit loss from too many shoplifters.

The Cincinnati Police departments procedure allows for officers to use a taser on individuals between the ages of 7 to 70, who actively resist arrest. Officer Browns actions were within procedure.

Given the media attention of this and the reaction from said media, the mayors office and city administration/police department, Officer Brown has since become scrutinized for simply doing his job. He has been taken off street patrol, placed on desk duty and stripped from working details and is being punished for doing what he was hired to do by the Kroger Company.

The mayor, prosecutor and police chief all agreed to have the $53 theft charge and resisting arrest charge dropped and the theft suspect walked free. The media released a report that the juvenile and her parent, (who never once took the responsibility for her daughters actions and applauded Officer Brown for catching his daughter stealing) yet they  have been awarded $220,000 dollars from the City of Cincinnati and $20,000 from the Kroger Co., for a total of $240,000. That’s right, $240,000 has been given to the juvenile for stealing $53 worth of merchandise. Anyone see the problem here? The juvenile also wrote an apology letter to the City of Cincinnati AND to the Kroger company for stealing. The juvenile did not write a letter to Officer Brown thanking him for doing his job and trying to mentor to her.

Meanwhile, Officer Brown has not been able to support his family financially by working details. Officers often work these details to help pay for tuition, family vacations, medical bills, home repairs, etc.

Office Brown has had a TON of support from his fellow officers, as well as the community. In fact, a vast majority of comments on the Cincinnati Police Departments facebook page shows the outpouring of support for Officer Brown and a discord for the mayor, prosecutor and police chief for their lack of support for the officer and for paying an astronomical amount of TAXPAYER monies to an individual that made a choice to steal from a store.

So are you ready to show support for Officer Brown? This go fund me page is set up to show monetary support for him and his family during this difficult and stressful time. An officer that was simply doing his job and is subsequently being punished for it at the same time.  Please show your support and donate.

-Thank You!
