Team 1796 is a high school robotics club from Queens Vocational & Technical High School in Long Island City, New York. Queens Voc is a Title 1 school that provides Career and Technical Education (CTE) to over 1,700 students, 75% of which identify as Hispanic or Latino (according to 2014-2015 NYC Schools Snapshot Report). Queens Voc differs from other high schools around the city and state; as a CTE school Queens Voc offers students the opportunity to study a technical or industrial trade of their choice and receive industry-recognized certifications within that field.

Our members come from various minority-populated neighborhoods throughout New York City, in some places over 26.41% of families live at or below the poverty line (according to the Health department’s 2015 Federal Income Guideline report). From our observation, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are not at the forefront of future career goals for many of the children that live in these neighborhoods. Many parents coming from other countries, including my own, define success as having a place to sleep at night and having enough food to eat, the children of these parents, in many cases, have the potential for much more than simply surviving. These children are part of the next generation of innovators after all. What motivates us to work to spread the message of FIRST is the inquiry we can inculcate upon the hearts and minds of future scientist, engineers, and leaders. The preconceived notion that exists today presents STEM fields as too complicated, too rigorous, and too “boring” to pursue as careers. FIRST Team 1796 has another mission, to erase this notion and shift the paradigm by aiding in FIRST’s efforts to reach out and expand the incentive of pursuing STEM careers.

We need your help to help raise money for these students to be able to go to the 2016 FRC FIRST Robotics Championship. We will need to rent a bus along with other ementities and many of the students do not have the money nor resources to pay for this trip. It would be greatly appreached whether it is 1 dollar or 100 dollars. Anything can help this team make it out to St. Louis Missouri. This trip will be taking place april 25th to May 2nd 2016.

Here is a little information about the chairman award. The Chairman award the most prestigious award within FIRST Robotics. It honors the team/school that best represents a model for other to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST.

The students at Queens Vocational shared their stories; They talked about something deeper, something more than just the robots. They not only identified the problems within their community but, they actually found meaningful solutions to them.
The students went out there and truly made a difference. They aimed to spark an idea of positivity within the community and those who live within them.

The real reason why the students applied for the Chairman's award was because as one student put it, "we wanted to tell everyone about us, so they know our struggles. we invited others to take a look at another perspective of what it means to be a FIRST team. It brought the rest of the world to see New York city, to see our backyard. They saw our reality and realize wow, we can be part of that too." These kids are really amazing.

Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to read a little about us and why we could really use your help.
