help please we need a new car

Hello to everyone reading this.
I’m am Justin, and I’m the sole provider for my family. I suffered a back injury at my old job and have not been unable to work. I’m in the process of getting disability. My son is six years old and has some special needs that require Dr visits. To top it off my wife doesn’t drive or work at this time.
We’ve tired the taxi, but it adds up and it’s difficult with our son. Our car, we’ve been told is not worth fixing. It is a 1997 Ford Escort and has some major problems. I have spent all of our money to fix the car.
1.It has no power steering and with my back problems it is very difficult to drive.
2. Front shocks are basically gone.
3. Brakes are going and will need new brakes sooner then later.
4. Transmission is very weak and shifts hard. Sometimes does not shift out of 2nd gear.
I have tried to work, but with my back problems I can’t hold a job for any length of time.
We live in a very small town that does not offer public transportation, or can we get sevices such as uber. We need a new vehicle to get us back and forth to the drs.
I am in the process of getting disability which could take years to get or not at all. Thank you for reading, and hopefully you can help. You may say that not very much for a car. We have a friend that’s willing to sell us a used car that will get us back and forth to Dr. visits and for errands. Asking for help has not been easy, but very humbling because we have never been in this situation before. In fact I’ve been that person that has always helped other people when in need.
