MultiFreight Ltd is proud to support our local Mid-Suffolk Link of the Chernobyl Children's Lifeline charity.
The Chernobyl Children's Lifeline is a charity that supports the children still living in areas in and around the area affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
For these children, the future looks bleak - their home towns are still heavy with low-level radiation, causing higher levels of thyroid cancer than has ever previously been recorded (before the disaster, thyroid cancer struck one child per million. Since 1990, this has risen to 80 children per million.)
Poor sanitary conditions and unstable infrastructure only worsen the standard of living.
Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline aims to provide respite for these children. Studies have shown that a stay of only 4 weeks in the UK can help to boost their immune systems so much that it can take up to 2 years for them to fall back to the previous levels.
While in the UK, these children stay with volunteer families and attend local activities. They are also offered medical and dental checkups, as well as sight tests, but the main aspect for the children is enjoying outings and experience that they have simply never had before!
The charity provides the children with a year's supply of vitamins to take back for themselves as well as any siblings under the age of 16.
They also return home with a medical care package, full of items that we might find everyday, but that are almost impossible for the average family in Belarus or the Ukraine to access, such as immodium, mouth ulcer and cold sore treatments, chap sticks, plasters, and other items.
We are hoping to raise money to help the charity to source these items.
The charity is also hoping to be able to raise funds to replace their minibus. This is a vital means of transport for bringing the children to and from the airport for their stay in the UK, as well as taking them to their activities while they are here.
