I'm Salomon Lukonga, A young 17-year-old refugee who was born in Nyarugusu refugee camp,Tanzania. Back in 1996 my parents together with 5 of my older siblings left our homeland D.R. Congo due to war. They then stayed in Nyarugusu refugee camp for 15 years( the period myself and my other 4 siblings were born). In 2011 we were very lucky enough to be picked by Australia due to ongoing struggles. It's a blessing every day waking up to opportunities right by the door. Something we only used to dream of.
By combining heart of helping other and love of fashion I created ''Mojalivin''. A clothing line that gives 30% of its profit to help with medical aid in Congo, starting with South Kivu. By buying a Mojalivin shirt you are not just going to look good but you will also be helping someone with medication. in another way, "look good while making a difference". South Kivu is a province where my parents are from and it has very few hospitals and medical access. people are suffering every day and I can't stand here and do nothing about it. It's a place where if you don't have enough money to go to a different city to get treatment; all you can d is just stay there and hope for the best. Well, sadly this is how the situation is in Kivu. did you know by 2008 the second war in congo aftermaths was 5.4 million death which makes it the second deadliest conflict worldwide since world War II?
I used to think being in a poor environment with no food or medication was the worse thing ever but...NO...I was wrong, I think the worse thing would be someone like me who knows how bad it is and don't do anything about it.
Lately, I have learned useful business steps and how to turn my ideas into a reality through Impact Academy and Fire Station 101. Everything is set and ready to take off but finance is what is lacking. I'm currently working with QUT Fashion Accelerator program to designing quality shirt. Also, I have formed a partnership with AusCongo which is an Australian based organization that's already in action helping the Congolese people out of everyday struggles. I need $10000 to help with manufacturing, website, brand, photoshoot, marketing, comms, digital media and more. An idea is nothing without action to back it up. I'm putting my heart and head to this see a kids smile again.
mojalivin' = moja is a Swahili word for one(1). By livin'(living) or working together as one we can beat anything.
