Family on the Go.....Wheels Needed

Donation protected
Our dear friend, Veronica is a devoted mother of three boys.  Being a "Boys Mom"  is a fun, challenging, exciting and at times, labor intensive role, yet one that mom's of boys would not change.  Veronica faces this role with such gusto you would never know the added challenges she faces every day.  You see, of her three handsome boys, two live life with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  This genetic disorder is characterized by a progressive degeneration and weakening of the muscles, leading them to be totally dependent on others for their daily care.

During a recent visit with Veronica and her family, we learned her day-to-day life is filled with the normal routines of  getting up,  a cup of coffee, getting the boys ready for the day.   This is where her day differs from ours.  Her sons send her a text when they are ready to get out of bed and start the day.  She attends to each son's physical needs, getting them situated in their chairs,  completing their morning care, breakfast and then off to their day's schedule.  As their disease progresses, the more hands-on and intensive care they will need.  As the family's day draws to an end and the boys are situated in bed, Veronica's mothering is not done. She keeps her phone close as the boys call her during the night to be repositioned to prevent pressure sores.  Another day dawns.

Their daily activities are often filled with medical appointments in Houston's Medical Center and she has a mini-van that has been modified to transport the boys. The van has served them well but it is now failing mechanically.  During our visit she confided the repairs are starting to deplete her emergency funds she has been trying to build and not sure how much longer it will last.

OUR PURPOSE:  Veronica is not one to ask for help.  So, as her friends, we are putting together this page to help raise the money toward a replacement van.  We are researching the best options as there is a heavy financial aspect to obtaining these modified vans.  Unfortunately her sons have not made it off the  "Interest List" for special programs that provide some financial assistance and she alone, will bear the financial burden of acquiring a replacement van.

Currently we are looking at gently used vans that have already been modified and available through a few facilities in the US, or acquiring a gently used van that can be modified to accommodate both wheelchairs with a power ramp/lift.  Either one should have safe seating for her youngest son so they can continue to have family outings.

Either option will have a price tag of approximately $35,000-$50,000.  This is a huge expense for Veronica and has no room in her budget to take on the payment.  She does small jobs from home  which allows her to provide care for her children as she takes in each treasured moment with which she is blessed.  But this small income has very little room for such an enormous expense.

Please, take a moment and consider donating.  A village is needed to surround this Momma with love, support and continued mobility for her and her family.
