Mission: Adopt R & B

In the spring of 2017, R and B came to live with us. They had been removed from their mother and needed somewhere to stay until certain conditions were met. D.S.S. advised us that the babies would be with us for at least 10 weeks, and that by taking them, we would be keeping them from being split into separate foster homes. The employment we moved here for had just ended, Donnie was spending several days a week at the VA hospital, and he was considering using his GI bill to go back to school. It was not the perfect time to add a 5 month old and a 15 month old to our household, but we did.
After a couple of months of dividing our family in to 2 vehicles, we realized our short term family extension wasn’t going to be so short term and traded the 5 seat car in for an 8 seat suburban. A couple of more months and we started exchanging borrowed pack ‘n plays for real cribs. We celebrated birthdays and added 2 more Christmas stockings to our mantle. In January of 2018, a family court in S.C. granted us legal custody. It has now been over 2 years that we have been a household of 7. We are ready to adopt R and B. We want them to know that they are here, not because they needed a home, but because they are loved and wanted and belong.
Typically when children are placed in foster care homes by D.S.S. they assist in, and incur much of the expense of adoption, if the case comes to that point. In our case, because we are related to the children and because we live in N.C. and the children were placed by S.C. D.S.S., neither state will assist in handling or funding the adoption. This leaves us with the expense of not just one, but two adoptions.
Adoption can be very expensive. We have found a law firm that specializes in this type of case, and is able to mitigate the expense as much as possible. However, we are looking at about $8,000 in legal fees, if everything goes according to plan. We would like to invite you to help us in legally fusing together what is already, in our hearts, our family.
