Miss Maria's Kindergarten Fund

Donation protected
As volunteer room parents to Miss Bermary Maria's bilingial kindergarten class at Bridgeport's Cesar Batalla School, we see 24 children who come to school every day in spite of significant challenges.  They are entering the doors of a school that was ranked 2nd to last in literacy in the state of Connecticut.    Bermary was given $25 for school supplies for the ENTIRE school year for her class.  10 of the children have been identified as food insecure to the point that their only source of food is the free breakfast and lunch they are served in the cafeteria.

On the other hand, every day they are given hope.  They are loved by a wonderful, caring teacher who runs a clean, orderly classroom and has up to this point used her own money to buy uniforms, coats and snacks for the children who need them.

We are dedicated to this class too.  Our plan is to provide a week's worth of healthy snacks each Monday, such as fruit and home made muffins that the kids can enjoy in the classroom and take home at the end of the week so that they may eat over the weekends.  Before long weekends and holidays we will give the families food care packages including staples such as bread, peanut butter, fruit and rice.

After two months of school, the supplies in the classroom have started to run out.  Soon, pencils will be broken in half so that they can be shared.  We have committed to provide Bermary with any resources and supplies she needs throughout the school year.

As the weather is changing we are organizing donations for winter coats, boots, hats and gloves.  The kids need warm pajamas as many of their homes have irregular heat.

Thinking back to when our children were in kindergarten, it was a magical time for them.  Their worlds expanded as they became little readers,  developed friendships, as they laughed, played and ran carefree on the playground.  Looking at these sweet faces every week we are committed to giving these children the best possible chance to grow and thrive...to be carefree if only for a little while.

Your donation will be used directly in order to support our efforts to supply the weekly snacks, supplemental food care packages, and school supplies needed in the classroom.   As the weather changes, we are responding immediately to kids who have no warm coats or sweaters.  We are now are relying on donations and using our own money for these efforts and will certainly continue to do so. We could use your support to subsidise these programs and allow us to act on many more plans that we have in order to  better support these children and their families.  A full accounting of these funds is available upon request.

Should you like to know more or have any questions, please contact us.

We are looking forward to updating you as the school year progresses on the many successes of these little people and feel so fortunate that we have the opportunity the be a part of their lives.

With great thanks,
Erin and Nancy
