Help Us Preserve Mildred Thompson's Legacy -
Mildred Thompson (1936-2003) was an American artist whose work spanned over four decades and multiple genres. Her practice transcended ever-changing art world trends and prevailing narratives prescribed for her generation, race and gender. She instead chose freedom of exploration - defying norms and refusing to be categorized - and left behind an expansive catalog primarily in painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. Thompson’s truly unique and cultivated abstract visual language, inspired by theories and systems of science and music, demands deeper exploration.
Toward this goal, the Thompson estate in Atlanta plans to develop the non-profit Mildred Thompson Foundation to raise money for this important artist legacy project. Curator Melissa Messina has identified a number of collections management necessities, including appraising, conserving, insuring, organizing, and documenting Thompson’s inventory as first steps toward future promotion and exhibition of this accomplished yet under-recognized oeuvre. As the estate has no self-supporting financial means for these efforts, it will raise funds to accomplish these goals through the Foundation.
Creating this critical platform, however, requires signifcant legal fees - upward of $8,000. For this, we need your help! And the necessity is all the more urgent as the estate's executor Donna Jackson, Thompson's long-time partner, is privately and gracefully battling a serious health issue at 80 years young.
