Fighting homelessness--DV Awareness

Donation protected
My name is Skye and I’m a senior at the University of Washington. I’m setting up this campaign to help raise funds for my family and to raise awareness about relationship violence and sexual assault. My family and I are survivors of domestic violence, and while our abuser has separated from us fora few years, we are still suffering from lasting effects of the abuse and control. When our abuser left, we struggled financially because they were the main provider for our family, so my mother could not afford the house we were currently living in. My mother’s credit had also been destroyed by the time they left. After going from friend’s to friends, we ended up with my uncle and cousin. Unfortunately, our house has been sold and we need to find a new place to live, but because of my mother’s poor credit, it is difficult to find a place that will rent to us, but if we can pay a few months in advance, our options open up a little more, which is why I’m organizing this event. I am asking for folks who can, donate to this campaign, or attend this event and donate there. If you can’t donate, please help me spread this around!

I’m a full time student set to graduate in June, but if worst comes, I may have to drop out for the time being until we can get a place to live. My brother is also set to finish high school next year, and he has some great opportunities coming for him, so it’s important we can find a place relatively close for  him to finish. I’m majoring in Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies and minoring in Diversity, and it is my passion to fighting oppression and inequality on all dynamics. I wanted to take this unfortunate situation and turn it into something more. To do so, I am organizing this awareness event around relationship violence and sexual assault to help raise funds for my family, but also to speak out about these issues. On April 28th, at Mountlake Terrace High School (the school I went to and where I’m completing my internship for my degree), this event will be held. I am currently putting together speakers for the event to help shed some light on the issues, and in ways not many think about. I want this event to not only help my family with finding a new home to live, but to also help us heal. I want this event to not only do that, but help other survivors heal as well. And even more so, I want to help those who may currently be in abusive situations know that they’re not alone and there are people who care about them and are here to help. I want folks who have never been in these situations know that yes, it does actually happen; and yes, it probably has happened to someone near and dear to them. This event is not only here to help my family, but here to help you.

Even if you’re unable to help by donation, I want to thank you for taking the time to read this. Anything you can do to help is hugely appreciated!

Thank you!
