Hi my name is Melanie!
I recently joined the SLV.Global programme, that helps and allows undergraduates and postgradutes to do volunteer work in international countries. I've signed up to take part in a mental health programme in the country of Bali. This programme will essentially provide me with the skills needed to continue studying and further expand my experience in the mental health field. As a psychology student, this is something very close to my heart, and thankfully SLV.Global aslo provide a qulaification at the end of the trip which will be useful to me in future mental health work.
The first few days in Bali are all about getting me trained up to work effectively in a different culture. Throughout
my placement, my time will be split between a variety of projects to challenge me and ensure I put all my knowledge and previous experience to good use. I'll be running sessions in one of Indonesia's inpatient psychiatric facilities as well as teaching English and working with people with specific needs. There are also weekly workshops, which focus on alternative treatments for individuals with mental health issues. This exposure to non-Western approaches to heal the mind is massively beneficial for wanting to work with international client groups in the future.
It would be really helpful as this trip requires various travel expenses, and as a student it can be hard sometimes. I really hope if helpful to you; that you too research SLV.Global and learn more about their charitable voluntering programme and become just as passionate as I am about understanding mental health.
