Meghan's DR Service Trip

Donation protected
Hi, everyone!  My name is Meghan, and I’m a sophomore at Exeter High School. This upcoming April break, I am going on a service trip with 30 classmates to the Dominican Republic through an organization called Rustic Pathways. I’ve started a  Go Fund Me in hopes of raising the money needed to help fund this trip!

While in the Dominican Republic, my peers and I will be building homes for families living in the bateyes, which are marginalized Haitian-Dominican communities. For six days, we will be working alongside Rustic Pathway volunteers as well as the families who will be owning these homes, learning about and immersing ourselves in the Dominican culture.

While this trip is mainly focused on building homes and helping these families, it also has an educational aspect which each student will fulfill. We will be speaking about what we did on the trip, our topic of research, and how it affected us. For my topic, I have decided to look into how children in the bateyes live compared to those in first world countries such as the United States. Things like education, athletics, and freedoms are some of the many aspects I will be looking into while I am staying in the Dominican Republic. I will be using my four years of Spanish classes to help me talk face to face with kids, parents, and families while working, and gathering information and sharing stories with them, along with keeping a journal for all of this information, which I will present to fellow students and faculty of Exeter High School. I am hoping to convey the message of gratitude, appreciation, and thankfulness for the blessing we may sometimes take for granted in our daily lives.

This trip means a lot to me because one day, I hope to teach and learn from children, and I think being able to talk to and connect with kids of many cultures, ethnicities, religions, races, and nationalities is vital to the success of being a teacher and human. I believe this trip will help me expand my worldview and understanding of the human condition, while making a difference in their lives. Thank you for all of your generosity, and I hope you have a wonderful day!
