Family Empowerment: Building Nation

Donation protected
Assalamualaikum and Hello,

In 11th August, Malaysians were shocked, when a 38 year old single mother were sentenced to 2 years jail for stealing. Nor Farina Che Ya had been found guilty of stealing tudung, underwear and ingredients for rendang dishes. It was reported that she couldn’t afford herself and her kids, which leads her to go against her moral principles. She and her child were then supported by the Zakat Institution. The story of Nor Farina’s is very tragic and heartbreaking and is one of the thousands.

In 2010, it was  a total of 831,860 women or 2.9% of the population were widowed, divorced or permanently separated. Unofficial data indicates that Malaysian single mothers in the rural areas have on average five or more children.

Many of single mothers in Malaysia face no option other than accepting poorly paid, low-level jobs in generally unfavourable working conditions, with an unfortunate few resorting to the sex trade to make ends meet. Unable to afford childcare and often saddled with the additional burden of caring for extended family members, many more single mothers are housebound and forced to rely on modest government assistance to even put food on the table.

The single mothers/fathers issue are a very serious one and need to be prevented as it could jeopardise the development of our beloved nation. This is where IKRAM Australia steps in.

IKRAM Australia will organise a social business training and competition in the 1st October 2016 with the main objective of rallying the brilliant Malaysian minds in Australia to brainstorm and come out with viable and practical solution to the single parent issue. The business training is a part of our signature #MeetIkramOz conference with the 2016 theme,“Family Empowerment: The Foundation to a Well-built Nation”.

We have the brain but we don’t have the money and that’s why we need your help. All the crowdfunding made by you would be given as a grant to the group with the most promising social business idea for them to execute.

This is something new and have never been done by Malaysian organisations in Australia. Your donations would meant so much to us, to the single parents and to our beloved country, Malaysia.
