March For Our Lives, Riverside, CA

$3,805 of $7,500 goal

Raised by 92 people in 1 month
Some of you may know me, others not.  My name is Lecia Elzig and I am one of the organizers March For Our Lives, Riverside, CA.  Although I described myself as an organizer, our march is being completely planned and driven by a team of eight high school students representing five high schools in western Riverside County.  They are the planners and I am really just a “worker bee” among a group of adults who are carrying out the behind the scenes operations of the march.  Our goal is to make the students’ vision a reality.

In case you are unfamiliar with March For Our Lives, it is an outcry of the brave student survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Parkland, Florida. On March 24, the kids and families of March For Our Lives will take to the streets across the country to demand that their lives and safety become a priority and that we end gun violence and mass shootings in our schools today.

This is not a partisan issue; every parent wants their child to be safe at school.  This April will mark the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting. In spite of the horror we saw in Columbine, these tragedies continue and are almost too many to count. They are unfortunate proof that whatever we’ve been doing as a nation to address this is not working.

In addition to the main march in Washington D.C., there are over 600 sibling marches across the U.S.  In Riverside, CA, we are expecting 5,000 marchers (based on Event Brite registrations).  There are numerous expenses associated with planning a march like this.  The street closures alone (which include an official traffic plan and hiring a traffic management company to erect and remove barricades) is a minumumof $5,000.  We also need to rent sound system equipment, print posters and banners, and pay for both city and county permits.

March For Our Lives Riverside is asking for your help.  Any amount you can spare will help us reach our goal and give our students the voice and platform to make their impassioned plea:  We must address this issue pro-actively and this must stop.  In the land of the free and home of the brave, children should be safe at school.

After the march, I will post an itemized list of exactly how the money was spent.  Any funds raised beyond what we need will be donated to the March For Our Lives organization.

Hi everyone,

Thanks to a last minute grant we received from the national MFOL organization, we have about $1200 left over from the GoFundMe expenditures. When I originally posted the campaign, I said that any remaining funds would be donated to the nation MFOL organization.

I'm asking your permission to use these funds to financially support additional student efforts against gun violence in our community. The student organizers of the Riverside MFOL have already conducted or planned three additional events (a town hall meeting on April 14, a march and rally on April 20, and a "die in" against gun violence at Ken Calvert's office on April 20). They intend to remain very active, to maintain the pressure on our lawmakers.

I'm asking your permission to use the remaining funds to further support their local efforts rather than donate them to the national organization. Please reply back to me as soon as you can (or just comment here) with your opinion about this. It would be great if we could continue to support our local students in their ongoing efforts to address this very important issue.

Do I have your permission to retain the remaining funds for our local students' use? The funds would be used for the sole purpose of local student events against gun violence and school shootings.

Again, thank you so much for your support!

Thank you so much to all of you who were able to give to the campaign, as well as those of you who supported us in your hearts. The campaign is now over and we were able to raise almost $4,000 in just two weeks. Also, at the last minute, our march was a recipient of a grant from the national March For Our Lives organization. This ensured that all of our expenses were covered.

The march was last Saturday and was a resounding success! Our high school students gave passionate, inspirational speeches that were truly the voices of change.

As soon as all the bills are paid and I can reconcile everything, I will post an itemized list of expenditures. Thanks again for your generosity and support!

To Our Wonderful Donors,

This morning we passed the amount of $3200! Thank you so much for your continued support of this important event. Our goal is to have an event that is meaningful, inspirational, and will bring about change. Your contributions played a significant role in making this happen.

Please keep sharing and posting about this campaign. It's an unfortunate reality that it takes a lot of money to put on an event like this. I'm certain that your support will ensure we accomplish our goals for a powerful and meaningful march.

Thank you SO much!

Hello Wonderful Donors,

Our campaign is into day four and you've donated $2335! Thank you SO much for your support of this worthwhile effort!

One of our donors (Sue Mitchell) "shared" the GoFundMe page for our campaign to all of her friends and family on Facebook and raised an additional $345. This came from a number of people making small donations. It is such a great way to get closer to our goal that we created the Facebook Share Challenge.

If you're up to it, please share with your Facebook friends. Maybe you'll be the one to beat Sue!

Thanks again and hope to see you all at the march on the 24th!
