Maple Syrup: Needham MA

Donation protected
Three years ago we decided to try and tap some maple trees around the neighborhood to try and make some maple syrup. The project was a HUGE success and we've had a ton of fun working with kids and families around the neighborhood and students from Olin College. We've learned a lot over the last two years and we'd like to take our hobby to the next level and move out of the industrial kitchen at Olin and include more people in the neighborhood.

The process is TONS of fun and we're eager to bring folks together as we enjoy this New England tradition. From collecting sap to boiling everything down and bottling the finished product, our goal is to create a fun, educational community project.
Picture of Sam flashing "M" for Maple with buckets of sap collected from sugar maple trees on Standish Road and Mayflower Road. It take 40 gallons of syrup to make roughly 1 gallon of maple syrup.

My plan this year is to buy enough supplies to collect sap and cook it down to maple syrup in the driveway with friends and neighbors. Whether you donate $5 or $50, we'll make sure you feel included and get some Home made maple syrup from our neighborhood sugarbush.

This money will be used to purchase:
1 Wood fired evaporator with fire bricks and blower ($1500)
1 Filter and bottling unit ($650)
24 high quality aluminum buckets with lids for collecting sap  =($600)
2 cords of wood (est $250)

The remaining funds will cover miscellaneous supplies such as filters, taps, storage buckets, bottles, and a hydrometer for measuring the sugar content in the syrup during the finishing phase of making maple syrup.

The evaporator and finisher will all be purchased locally from WF Mason up in Maine  and my hope is that we'll come together and enjoy the process of making maple syrup for years to come. Outside the filters and wood, we'll be able to reuse everything we purchase for many years. WF Mason has an excellent reputation and I expect the evaporator and finisher to last for 10+ years. While I can't guarantee how much maple syrup we'll make each year - that depends on the trees and weather - I'll be distributing the syrup we make to everyone that contributes. None of the syrup is being made for retail or wholesale. This is purely a community activity. If you're curious to taste the finished product, I have 2 ounce samples from last season that I'm more than happy to share. Swing by and see me at 14 Standish Road or shoot me an email.
