The Story of Manohar, Sophie and Ollie
Living in India for the past few months has been amazing, but seeing the street dogs struggling for life has been tough. Where we live is surrounded by scrubland and dozens of sad looking pups roaming around.
One morning, walking to the bus stop we heard an awful wailing noise. A teeny tiny puppy was lying injured on the side of the road, crying for help. Though it broke our hearts we left him be as it had been instilled in us not to touch the dogs, plus we were sure the mother would come soon.
When we returned from work eight hours later we searched for him, and just as we were giving up and reassuring eachother that his mother must have rescued him, we spotted his little face under a bush! The locals humanitarian act had been to drag him out of the direct sunlight and place near him a tin of water that he was now too weak to lift his head to drink. We felt leaving him again would mean he had no chance of survival, so we wrapped him in a towel, carried him back to our guesthouse, put him in the only covered thing available (a flowerpot!) and fed him some milk!
We have been caring for him ever since! Here he is after his first bath.
He’s had a tough short twelve weeks of life, a few weeks after recovering from his first injury he was attacked by another dog, who fractured his ribs and left him with a bunch of puncture wounds, and we didn’t think he would make it again! He endured and is now a regular happy pup, with only a few battle scars to show.
After seven weeks of looking after this wee pup with help from others it’s safe to say we’ve fallen in love. As he’s a Tamil dog, we’ve given him a Tamil name! Manohar, which means ‘the one who steals the heart’ (!)
He’s been part of our life pretty much for the whole time we’ve been in India, he’s a sweet little pup who’s just so grateful to be alive and loved! We’ve come to the slightly mad decision to try to bring him back to the UK as a good home for him here has proved hard to find, we were planning on getting a dog soon any way, and mainly LOOK AT THAT SHMOOSHY LIL FACE!
It’s going to be a bit of a faff and a bit of a cost but worth it. Thanks for reading the story of Manohar, we’ve set up a gofundme page in case anyone might want to help us bring him home - we’ve set £530 as the goal which will cover one of the costs, the customs clearance to get him into the UK. Instead of Christmas pressies for us this year please just pop a couple of quid into the Manohar fund!
Thanks!
