Malaria Research Internship

Donation protected
I am a third year student at the University of Georgia who will be traveling to Tanzania, a country in East Africa, this summer (2018) to assist at a research lab that is investigating vaccination strands for Malaria. The research centre is a part of the Bill and Melinda Gates malaria partnership. I will be interning there for most of June and some of July assisting in malaria research. Click here if you are interested in information about the Amani Research Centre.

Malaria is a lift-threatening disease transmitted to people via a parasite that is carried over from a mosquito bite. People particularly susceptible to the disease are infants, children under 5 years of age, pregnant women, as well as non-immune migrants. In 2015, malaria resulted in 429,000 deaths, of which, roughly 292,000 were children in the African region. It is preventable and curable. Due to malaria research and proper prevention practices such as vaccines, the malaria mortality rate for at risk populations has decreased by 29% from the years 2010 to 2015.

While there, a colleague (Emily) and I will also be conducting an independent research study designed toward teams (specifically that of a research team) and their satisfaction in the workplace enivronment–given the humanitarian benefits of achieving such a goal as developing malaria vaccines for various strands. The aim of the study is to promote conversation and provide feedback to the research team.

Donations will help pay for my plane ticket there, transportation from the airport to the research facility, room and board, and the required vaccinations. The internship is unpaid and therefore any amount you could donate would be of great help. Thank you!

I plan on documenting the trip in some format, so look out for updates on that. Once again, thank you!
