Help Us Protect Our Burials

Malama Kakanilua is a group made up of lineal and cultural descendants of those who are buried in the Sand Dunes as well as concerned and dedicated community members. We continue our work to protect the Iwi Kupuna (bones of our ancestors) from the desecration occuring in the Central Maui Sand Dunes. For over ten years, we have been sharing the history and mo'olelo of this Wahi Kapu while fighting to protect the burials. The Dunes are a continuous Ecological Feature unique to Maui that became the sight of the famous battle of Kakanilua in 1776. The sand is the final resting place of those who resided in this area for generations as well as those who fought and died in this hisoric battle. The Central Maui Sand Dunes are a Sacred Ancient Burial Ground.
This Sacred Burial Ground has been and continues to be destroyed by actions that represent a long history of ignoring the cultural and spiritual resources of the Kanaka Maoli. We are battling to save the last undeveloped Sand Hills in Wailuku
Funds are being sought to help with all aspects of this battle as well as for future preservation, logistics, signage and education. Please kokua if you are able.
Any amount is truly appreciated.
