Maigenet Shifferraw Fellowship Fund
Dr. Maigenet Shifferraw -- an Ethiopian women's rights advocate, President of the Center for the Rights of Ethiopian Women (CREW), and former professor of Adult Education at the University of the District of Columbia -- passed away on February 24, 2016. In memory of her tireless service in bettering the lives of Ethiopian women and children, her family has established the Maigenet Shifferraw Fellowship, an annual fund that will provide scholarship and seed-money to those working in Ethiopian women and children issues.
During it's first award cycle, The Maigenet Shifferraw Fellowship will consist of two components:
1) Scholarship: $5,000 toward a scholarship for an awardee who is working on a thesis or dissertation in areas concerning Ethiopian women and children.
2) Seed-Money: $5,000 to support women in Ethiopia who deserve to start small businesses and training in the form of micro-credits.
Your generous support through this GoFundMe campaign will directly fund the scholarship and provide seed-money during the 2017 award cycle. The administration of the Maigenet Shifferraw Fellowship is currently run by her family and will include board members, participation by invited scholars, and collaborations with other non-profit organizations in the coming months.
From the family of Dr. Maigenet Shifferraw, we deeply thank you for your contribution in keeping her legacy and efforts alive.
Dear family and friends,
Thank you for your continued support during the transition of my mother, Maigenet Shifferraw, who passed away on February 24, 2016. And thank you for your contributions to the Maigenet Shifferraw Fellowship fund thus far. As you know, the Maigenet Shifferraw Fellowship is an annual award that provides scholarship and seed-money for those working on Ethiopian women's and children's issues within Ethiopia and abroad. This fellowship will allow for the legacy of my mother's tireless service as an Ethiopian women's rights activist and Adult Education professor to live on, while providing opportunity for those committed to advocating for Ethiopian women and children.
Here is an update: Within the last two weeks we have raised a total of $6,745 for the fellowship fund ($4,145 through our online fundraising campaign and an additional $2,600 in cash and check donations). Our annual goal is to raise $10,000 for fellowship money that will directly benefit our award recipients.
It is not too late to donate toward the fellowship! Please let people know how they can make a donation through our online campaign by sharing the campaign link to your network: www.gofundme.com/maigenetshifferraw
