This is to help raise money to buy buzzy4shots to donate to hospitals so that children who have to get painful injections have a drug free pain relief.
On Sunday the 31st of May 2015, at 9:30 am Gillian (Slaven) Love, and Graham Lang who kindly volunteered to run with her, (both from ayr) will be running the Edinburgh marathon in aid of raising money to buy at least 50 buzzy4shots.
Gillian Love has an 11 year old daughter Sophie who has suffered with arthritis since the age of 5. She has regular hospital appointments to have her bloods taken and to receive steroid injections to help with the pain. No mother wants to see their child hurting but on top of this Gillian also has to personally give Sophie weekly methotrexate injections at home. Sophie has now been told she will be getting a different injection too, second weekly injection! Having been poked and prodded at from a young age Sophie usually deals with the pain of the needles and injections well for such a young girl, but on her first experience with the new injection she cried and screamed in pain. This new drug seems to be particularly painful when it enters the body through the needle. This is when Gillian was told about Buzzy.
Buzzy is a bumble bee shaped drug free pain relief for children like Sophie, or any children that have to go through similar routines. Buzzy, is strapped on to the area where the needle will be going in and once switched on will vibrated causing the nerves in the area less able to register sharp pains. Buzzy also comes with a cool pack that is put in the freezer and is strapped on with buzzy to further numb the area. It is such a simple idea that makes such a huge difference to both children, and parents of children who are regularly having to be suffer the pain of needles and injections.
Each buzzy costs around £40-£50 and with the cost of travelling to multiple hospital appointments on a regular basis on top of the normal cost of living not all parents are able to afford a buzzy. So after Gillian bought Sophie her buzzy she decided, along with her volunteer marathon partner Graham, to raise money to buy at least 50 buzzys that she could donate them to hospitals to use for the children at their appointments and to donate to parents that are unable to buy one themselves.
