“AN EVENING WITH THE MASON CLIMAX”
The Locust Heights & Western Railroad, of Clarksburg, West Virginia, is known to many for its custom built "Mason Climax" steam locomotive—currently the only operating example of a Climax locomotive in West Virginia! The railroad offers free rides to guests each Wednesday night during the summer of each year. Unfortunately, the line has sustained a debt of nearly $5000 due to required repairs of the locomotive's boiler. In 2017, more than $2,000 was donated towards our campaign during our very first photography charter, which helped the railroad to pay towards those debts.
In 2018, as before, this GOFUNDME is not just to collect funds, but to offer donors the opportunity to participate in a special RAILFAN PHOTO CHARTER on the railroad to be held Sunday, May 20th. By offering this second charter, we hope that the railroad will finally be able to payoff the aforementioned debts. Also needed are funds for general repairs and maintenance of the railroad—a never ending necessity to keep the railroad in operation.
This year’s event is specially tailored to be a convenient add-on for those who will be participating in the Rail Heritage Weekend event at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in Pocahontas County! The Locust Heights & Western Railroad is located approximately 2.5 hours from Cass, and is easily accessible by traveling Corridor H between Elkins and Weston, and then accessing I-79 North. More specific directions from Cass are available upon request via email. (NOTE: you DO NOT have to be a participant of the Cass event to be a part of our charter…everyone is welcome to make a donation for a ticket! This event is in NO WAY affiliated with the operators of the Cass Scenic Railroad!)
The afternoon and evening event will include several "photo runbys", with photographers given the chance to stand alongside of the railroad at several locations to get pictures of the Climax and her train running past for photographs. In addition to the train itself, the event will also incorporate the railroad’s all volunteer staff dressed as period actors as well as the inclusion of several unique props. In addition to some of our classic runby scenes, we also hope to include some “new” angles that were not used during the 2017 event. Night photography opportunities and dinner will also be included. Individuals who desire to be a part of this special day can join us for a MINIMUM DONATION OF $80.00 USD. You MUST select one of the "PHOTO CHARTER" options in the "Rewards" section to participate. We also have discount packages available for groups of two. Only 30 tickets will be offered. For more information and more specific event schedule, please contact [email redacted]. ADDED 5/2/18: WALK UP POLICY: We are going to open up the the invitation for "walk ups" for our 2018 event. If you should decide on the day of the event to join us, you are welcome to drive up and see if we still have remaining tickets. We will accept your donation in person as cash or check. Ticket availability is first come, first serve, and prospective walk up guests must arrive no later than 3:30PM. For the comfort and enjoyment of our paying guests, we will offer up to 30 tickets ONLY!
UPDATED 5/2/18: Below is our TENTATIVE schedule for the event. If the special event train at Cass is late in its return, we will delay the start of our event by up to an hour. On the other hand, if all donors show up early, we will will move up our 1st trip by as much as an hour to 3:00PM. Note that the trips will take place during the afternoon and evening hours due to optimal lighting along the route during that time. There will be approximately 20-30 minutes between each run to allow the locomotive to take on water, and to allow guests an opportunity to use the restroom.

SOUVENIRS: Every ticket holder will receive a complimentary copy of our limited edition booklet, "The Locust Heights & Western Railroad: A Photographic History" as well as a commemorative brass tag. Also, those who are NOT able to attend may receive these souvenirs for a minimum $25.00 donation. As an added bonus for 2018 in-person attendees only, you will also receive a complimentary CASS SCENIC RAILROAD themed souvenir as well!
NOTE: If you would like to make a donation but are not able to attend, it would be welcome and appreciated. Please leave a note though to let us know so that we can offer a riding opportunity to another individual!

CAB RIDE RULES:
~We reiterate our above safety disclaimer. The cab can be a hot and dangerous place if you are not careful, so please use discretion when riding in the locomotive.
~The first donor to order a cab ride will get first choice of the trip they want to ride, and we will follow order from there. Your opportunity to decide will be made available to you at a later date once we have a better idea of what will be happening on each run.
~Each donor may only purchase ONE cab ride during the scheduled day.
~Your cab ride ticket does NOT include cab rides during photo runbys. Your time in the cab will be during the trip to and from each photo location only, and at times when the entire group is riding the train. You will be asked to exit the cab at any time that a photo runby or static photo is going to take place.
~We plan to make sure that each cab ride participant receives a cumulative full ride over the entire line even when chosen photo locations are near the beginning of the line. HOWEVER, in the event that there is a need to go back to the station boarding area without completing the full run, your cab ride WILL conclude with said return to the station unless otherwise noted on the day of the charter. If one group's trip is shorter than the rest, we MAY allow time to be made up during the night photo run, but this will be at the discretion of the railroad's owners.
