Revitalizing Lake Livingston

Rebuilding Aquatic Habitat on Lake Livingston

With 450 miles of shoreline, Texas' second largest lake is losing natural aquatic habitat and seeing fish populations decline.  Lake Livingston, once a premiere bass fishing lake in east Texas, is nearly devoid of aquatic vegetation, which greatly impacts the fishery, bird, and reptile habitat; and the water quality.

Now in its fourth year, Lake Livingston Friends of Reservoirs has:
1. Planted nearly 12,000+ American Water-willows in 18 sites
2. Enlisted 150 high school students from 7 school districts  to propagate, grow, and plant the water-willows
3. Attracted a multigenerational volunteer pool of 225 adults and high school students, age 16 to 80+.
4. Built an inventory of 10,000+ water-willows in various stage of development for future plantings

With the full support of partners Texas Black Bass Unlimited , Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Inland Fisheries, and Trinity River Authority ; along with multiple community organizations, our project on Lake Livingston is one of the largest programs of its kind in the U.S.

We also partnered with Texas Department of Corrections Ellis Unit and Lee College Horticulture program . The inmates are now researching new growth and propagation methods, and growing half of our plants.

Texan by Nature , a conservancy founded by Former First Lady Laura Bush, selected LLFoR as a Conservancy Wrangler, boosting our state-wide visibility.

Our10-year project  was estimated to cost approximately $10,000 per year, but we've reduced that cost by propagating our own plants.  We require $5,000 per year to buy materials for growing tanks, soil and pots, fertilizer, and pumps.

Funds will also be used for travel so we can share what we've learned with other communities creating similar programs.  LLFoR and similar programs improve water quality, build natural habitat, and draw the entire community into a major service program.

Our success in this program delivers four key benefits:
1. Reestablish a thriving aquatic habitat
2. Filter the water to increase clarity and quality
3. Reduce shore erosion
4. Educate and engage a multi-generational volunteer team on this environmentally beneficial project

By achieving these goals, we also hope to increase tourist activity in our region which in turn increases revenue, creates jobs, and improves quality of life.

Please help us turn Lake Livingston into a vibrant and alive recreational area for fisherman and water enthusiasts, and a thriving habitat for birds, fish, and wildlife.
