Hello Everyone!

For those of you I haven't had the pleasure of meeting my name is Liz Kasey.  I am the Web Manager and Photographer for the GCSC Athletic Department.  I am also the LPGA Assistant Golf Professional at Holiday Golf Club in Panama City Beach.

I was diagnosed at age 24 with Type 1 Diabetes.  Before that diagnosis I lived a very normal, active life, playing sports and earning the opportunity of a lifetime to attend College on a full golf scholarship.  Being a college athlete, symptoms of being thirsty, tired and having to use the bathroom often seemed normal; however, upon returning home after graduating from college, I saw my eye doctor at The Eye Center of North Florida for what I thought was an eye infection. Instead, my eye doctor found my eyes were hemorraging and I was slowly going blind and labwork showed my A1c was very high.  Because of my eye doctor and my amazing team of specialists, my eyes are healthy and my A1c has improved to within an almost perfect range.  And so began my journey as a Type 1 Diabetic.

Unfortunately not knowing I was a Diabetic probably for several years prior to my diagnosis, the Diabetes had caused some damage to my kidneys.  I took medication for a few years to help prolong the life of my kidneys until the medication decided to not play nice anymore, causing my potassium levels to raise to cardiac arrest levels.  I had to stop taking that medication and my kidneys began to rapidly decline.  In May 2016 I learned my kidneys are at 15% function and I would have to go on Dialysis and be placed on the transplant list.  I am fortunate to get to do Peritoneal Dialysis which allows me to do my treatments at home every night while I sleep.

When people find out what I am going through and the road I have ahead of me they feel sorry for me - it is human nature to have sympathy and feel sorrow for another's difficulties.  But my response is "If it has to be someone, why not me?"  You are asking how I can say that.  I'm not sure if there is anyone else in this world who has as much support as I have standing next to me.  I am so fortunate to be surrounded by my amazing family and friends.  I have the best medical teams available to help me  and I blessed with the opportunity to help support others walk through this same journey.

Dialysis is a bridge to a transplant.  If I am fortunate to receive both a pancreas and a kidney, I could once again live a nomal life free of Diabetes and kidney issues.

Thank you so very much for your support!  I truly appreciate it more than you could ever know.

Now let's go kick some kidney butt!

Sincerely,

Liz Kasey
