As an all volunteer 501 (c)3 tax deductible educational foundation, we are dedicated to raising awareness about Shallow Water Blackout,  prevention of Shallow Water Blackout deaths, and creating  sailing opportunities for Vermont's youth who would otherwise not have them.

Your gift of any amount ensures that Benjo's legacy lives on and will help us pursue our mission.  Information about making a donation is located at the bottom of this page.

Why We Founded the Live Like Benjo Foundation:

The Live Like Benjo Foundation was created in October of 2014 after the tragic death by Shallow Water Blackout of Benjamin C. “Benjo” Haller of Underhill, Vermont.  Benjo was a lifelong sailor, diver, water-lover, sailing instructor, and a SCUBA instructor with over 1,500 dives.  After realizing his lifelong dream of sailing thousands of miles from Malletts Bay, VT, to the Bahamas, Benjo drowned in only seven feet of water while spearfishing near Eluthera.  He was 27.

Shallow Water Blackout  is an underwater “faint” due to lack of oxygen to the brain brought on by prolonged breath holding. It occurs without warning and, without immediate rescue, victims quickly drown.

Shallow Water Blackout is triggered by lower than normal CO2 levels in the body caused by exertion, hyperventilation, or repeated dives.

No one is protected from Shallow Water Blackout; Swimmers, athletes, children  and anyone simply breathing hard or playing breath holding games is at risk.

Shallow Water Blackout can occur in any body of water: oceans, lakes, pools, even bathtubs.

Momma Dance - Benjo's boat:

Benjo's boat is now used to provide sailing adventures on Lake Champlain to our scholorship recepients.  Nine great friends of Benjo's from the International Sailing Center made three crews and sailed her back from the Eleuthera Islands to her home in Malletts Bay after we lost Benjo.
