Hello! My name is Lisa Ortiz and I was recently elected as a National Delegate for Bernie Sanders to the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia near the end of July. It’s such an honor and I am truly humbled by the faith placed in me by the voters in CD5 to represent their interests and the values of our political movement.
I have always considered myself a “political” person. I’ve never failed to vote, I always researched issues and subjects I didn’t understand and candidates I didn’t know, I consulted trusted groups (NEA, Dems, LGBTQ organizations, NOW, etc.) for their recommendations. During Obama’s campaign I even gave him some money, did a few shifts phone banking, and waved some signs, but I was never activated as I am now.
I discovered Bernie Sanders quite by accident, via an online political survey. No, not “Which Harry Potter Character Are You?” - rather, ISideWith.com (Check it out!). After answering all of the questions available and determining my level of passion for each, much to my surprise, up popped this disheveled, old, Jewish guy! As I researched to figure who he was, I found that I did in fact know him. He was that guy who filibustered for 8 ½ hours against tax cuts for the rich! He was that guy who stood up against a homophobe regarding gays in the military! He was THAT guy! And I was hooked. I joke that he’s my 98% political soulmate.
Since that time, a year ago right now, I’ve hosted, organized, gathered, flyered, phoned, canvassed, debated, posted, and campaigned for the values that Senator Bernie Sanders represents – primarily integrity, consistency, transparency, and common decency and civility toward our fellows. I am a Neighborhood Leader and a Precinct Committee Person for the Clackamas County dems and am one of many working to assist the democratic Party in implementing real Progressive changes which will transform the Party, such that it will live up to its name: The Democratic Party.
All of this is to say, I am in it for the long haul. AND I am asking for your support in the form of money, airline miles, or any other mode you might be in a position to offer. My goal is to raise $4000 as that is the amount we have been advised to gather to cover the cost of airfare, hotel, and meals. I need to buy my plane ticket this week so am hoping to reach the $1000 mark by that time. I need to have all funds secured by the first week of July.
