Lillie’s volunteer project in Fiji

500 KM IN 100 DAYS

Alex and I are fundraising for a 1 month trip to Fiji with a charity called Think Pacific. We have decided to run 5km a day for 100 days to cover the project costs. This will definitely be a challenge for both of us - Lillie, because exercise isn’t my chosen free time activity! And Alex for committing to running everyday! We will start running New Years Day (TOMORROW), which will be a strong start to the challenge after celebrating New Years, and we will continue throughout the next 100 days even when we have work, birthdays, hen dos and weddings.

We hope that this physical challenge will serve as a daily reminder of what we're working towards!

We would really appreciate any contributions so that we can support the work that Think Pacific do, and to raise funds for the charity itself. We have just 4 months to each raise £1500 (below is a full breakdown of our costs)!

A little bit more information about what we will be doing in Fiji and what the money will be contributing towards;

During the 1 month in Fiji we will be living with our own Fijian family as a member of the village and volunteering in a local rural school. We’ll focus upon developing youth and sports in remote primary schools. As well as providing one-to-one tuition, establishing kindergarten programmes, coaching a variety of sports and leading ‘The House Cup’!

I can’t wait to get involved with the charity and to work with the children, to empower them with education, sports and extracurricular activities.

Alex is excited to be thrown in at the deep end of Fijian culture and learn so much about their ways and traditions, as well as pass on his passion for sport.

Think Pacific have partnered with the Fijian Government to ensure that the work that we will be doing with the charity is properly targeted to ensure real and proven benefits for the local people. We specifically chose Think Pacific because of how sustainable their work is.

The charity through the work of the volunteers, helps to support 20,000 Fijian children through their education and has done every year since 2009. This work is really needed because almost 75% of children in Fiji grow up in poverty, living on less than $1 a day. Schools are generally in a poor condition and devoid of basic facilities and most distressingly only 50% of children have access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation. Although Fiji is a safe and wonderful place and the local people are known for how extremely friendly and welcoming they are, most children grow up with limited education, basic knowledge and a severe lack of opportunity. Think Pacific is working to provide increased opportunities for children. They replenish school resources, provide teacher training, help to rebuild essential facilities and with the help of volunteers, increase standards in education, extracurricular activities and sports.

The money we need to raise can be broken down like so;
- 37% Direct Volunteer Costs: transport, food, accommodation, village support
- 30% Donations and Sustainability: to provide long term and annual resources
- 15% Project Planning: in-depth organisation, site visits, community and school outreach, government planning, management and review
- 8% 24/7 Support: communication, systems, IT and office
- 7% Expedition Leadership: local guide, first aid, expedition kit and equipment, staff training
- 3% Volunteer Recruitment: future project planning
- A small contribution to our flights, kit and vaccinations.

Thank you so much for any contributions and we look forward to providing what help we can to the people of Fiji!
