A lift for JJ

Terri Danis  SEYMOUR, TN
We first heard about Jeremy Jr. (JJ’s) from one of our volunteers who was contacted by a friend about the young man’s plight. It seemed that this friend, witnessed a young boy coming home from school on the handicapped bus. As the bus lowered his wheel chair to the street he watched as JJ wheeled himself over to a staircase leading to his front door. Then he watched as the boy pulled himself from the chair and crawled up the 5 steps. An older woman then appeared at the front door and retrieved JJ’s wheelchair as he crawled into the house.
As JJ was lowered from the bus the next day and went through this same routine, he was being observed by our volunteer. Curtis promptly call me and explained what he had just witnessed and then said…”something has to be done to help him”.

We met with JJ and his family a few days later and learned that JJ was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Due to these birth defects JJ does not have use of his legs. JJ’s Dad Jeremy is a single Dad raising JJ and his 2 older sisters Madison and Morgan. The family moved to Sevier County in the Fall of 2015 for a job opportunity and a new life. Jeremy (the children’s Dad) works 10 hours a day 5 days a week. They live in a rented 2 bedroom single wide with no handicap access. There are 5 steps and a small deck to access the front door and JJ crawls up and down twice a day on school days. The home is situated too close to the road to build a wheel chair ramp and code would require a long ramp which the property would not accommodate.

When we initially met this family and completed an application for assistance, they had a sofa and a TV in the living room, beds in the bedrooms (the girls sleep in one bedroom and JJ has his own room) Jeremy sleeps on the sofa in the living room. With this families story being told, amazing things are happening. Furniture, housewares, and other needs have been donated. It is truly inspiring to see people respond the way they have to a family with needs.

However the greatest need is yet to be met. The weather is turning colder and JJ is still crawling up and down the steps to go to school. We would like to install an exterior wheel chair lift so JJ doesn't have to keep getting out of his chair and crawling up and down stairs to get into his house. We have met with the lift company and we are estimating the total expense of the lift and installation to be approximately $10,345.00
This includes a concrete pad and walk to where the bus will let JJ off in his wheelchair.

LIVE-IT is a 501(c)3 Faith Based Organization that organizes volunteers to help with needs in our local community. With extreme cold weather about to arrive, we are reaching out via Go Fund Me to minimize JJ having to crawl up and down these steps in ice and snow.

Your donation of any amount is greatfully appreciated. On behalf of JJ and his family I want to thank you for your tax deductable gift.

Blessings
