United Life Support (ULS), an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, founded to locate and rescue at-risk individuals affected by drugs and alcohol.
In many cases, not only is the addict affected, but the immediate family as well. These families suffer everything from anxiety to acute depression. In many cases the family does not wish to file a missing person’s report. They do not want to involve the police and the report itself does little good.
ULS has located and rescued scores of people in the past 12 years. The founder’s son was one of the people rescued, not once, but many times. Currently ULS rescues adult males, ADULT FEMALES WITH CHILDREN (growing numbers), teens, and VETERANS (alarming numbers).
ULS provides the following services for individuals affected by this “plague”: LOCATE – search for the individuals at "crack shacks", abandoned houses, low budget hotels, and "shooting galleries". Once a “find” has been made, the family is notified that they are safe. RESCUE – involves removing the individuals from one or more of the above locations. SERVICES – depending on the drugs used; emergency care or locate the nearest De-Tox center that has a bed available. After de-tox (3-7 days) locate a rehabilitation center willing to take them in. The cost is between $150 - $300 depending upon the length and extent of services. In 95% of all cases the individuals have no money and many times their families cannot afford or will not help. Most of the time, de-tox centers are full and re-hab will not accept anyone unless they have undergone at least 3 days of de-tox. This leaves only a hotel room for a period of time until a bed at a de-tox center opens. Hotel rooms are especially needed when there are children involved (this is a growing tragedy). Food and basic toiletries are supplied by ULS because these people are in really bad shape.
ULS has always been funded by Joe Lucio. And will continue for as long as possible.
