Liberty and Justice for All

“…Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:

I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

-Emma Lazarus

This quotation, part of a longer sonnet called The Colossus, is inscribed on a bronze plaque inside the Statue of Liberty.  It is one of the most well-known bits of poetry in American culture, and reflects a recognition of the importance of immigration and its place in our collective American history.

On January 27th, 2017 President Trump signed an executive order barring entry to the US of refugees, immigrants, and even travelers holding legally issued US-visas from several countries: Syria, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen.

Already there are reports of people who legally live here in the United States, visiting their home countries, who were turned back at the airports when they tried to fly home to the US.

With the stroke of a pen, President Trump has effectively created a situation where those individuals here on legal visas are trapped, for fear of not being let back in. An untold number of geographically separated families have little hope to see their loved ones any time soon. In seeking to lower the odds of a terrorist attack on home soil, thousands of American immigrant families have been punished for no reason other than where they were born. This is unconscionably shortsighted and profoundly unamerican. It will not make our country safer and it will hurt the ones we should be welcoming to our shores. America is lessened by policies like this.

President Trump has taken a blunt axe to US immigration policy. The frayed ends, however, are real people and families who are vital threads in our American society that are now suffering needless punishment. Many of them justifiably feel unwelcomed and afraid in this new version of America we have seen revealed.

I consider myself tremendously grateful to have made friends from all over the world. Many of the people I work with and some of my closest friends are originally from these countries, or are Muslim, or both. They are doctors and nurses who have dedicated their lives to the sick and infirm. They are women and men of breathtaking talent, intellect, and compassion. They are among the best and brightest people I have ever met and they spend their time taking care of sick Americans. These are your doctors and nurses. They are pillars of their community, established scientists, caretakers, and fundamentally good people.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is planning to file a lawsuit challenging the legality of this order. The proceeds of this fundraiser will go directly to them to help in their efforts to restore some justice for those targeted by this new policy.

Who I am: My name is Andrew Thompson. I'm a resident physician in Michigan and an American citizen uncomfortable with the direction this country is headed.

My relationship with CAIR: None. I have no financial ties to the organization. They are a non-profit organization and the largest in the United States dedicated to improving American - Islamic relations and defending the civil liberties of Islamic people in the US.
