Let's Help Unite Here's NEW Brothers and Sisters

Donation protected
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The newly Unionized workers at the Jolly Coachman Pub and Liquor Store in Pitt Meadows are dealing with an employer who has been trying to break their organizing efforts from the moment they learned of the plans to Unionize.  The owners caught wind of the workers' organizing efforts, the very same day they were going to file for certification, and fired one of the main inside organizers.  Heidi Brekke was fired for wanting to prevent management from stealing the tips that the servers, bartenders, and kitchen staff depend on for survival.  Through the efforts of her new Union, Unite Here Local 40, Heidi was reinstated by the Labour Board.  Since then, the employer has continued to break practically every part of the Labour Code to quash support for the Union.  Particularly, the employer is trying to push and force these new Sisters and Brothers to quit by specifically targeting the income of these workers.  The workers at the pub and liquor store mostly earn minimum wage, are in many cases the sole income earners in their households, have to struggle to put together a 40 hour schedule, and have no extended medical benefits.  The squeeze the employer is putting on these members right before the holiday season is forcing financial hardship and is pushing these members to the breaking point.

While we are very sure the Labour Board will side with the Union, Unite Here Local 40, when it renders decisions on the countless unfair labour practices that have been filed, we all know too well how the time frame won't provide any relief for these workers before the holiday season.  Anything that you can donate to help these brave workers who have decided to stand up in an industry that is full of abusive employers will help them get through these difficult and early days, and help provide for their families during a time that we all know can be a major stress for low income workers.  There are approximately 40 workers suffering at the hands of this employer, and 100% of the money raised will go to these new Union Sisters and Brothers!

I'm calling on all members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, and our Brothers and Sisters from all Unions, as well as friends and sympathizers of the Labour Movement, to donate what they can.  Let's show this employer, and our new Sisters and Brothers of Unite Here Local 40 what the Strength of the Union can accomplish!
