Our friend, Leo -- one of the most principled and strong-willed, sarcastic and secretly soft-hearted people we know -- got the devastating news that he has stage 2 papillary thyroid cancer. That cancer has aggressively spread to the lymph nodes in his neck, his left vocal cord, his trachea, his esophagus, his larynx and to both his lungs.
On March 28th, doctors will perform delicate surgery to remove his thyroid and eliminate the cancer cells that have invaded his neck and throat. After weeks and weeks of painful recovery, he will then have his voicebox removed. Radiation is next on the list of things he will have to endure.
For someone as self-sufficient and proud as Leo, this is one hell of a blow. But he's nothing if not a fighter, and so while his path will be a long and difficult one, he will no doubt prevail over this horrible situation.
But he most certainly will need the help of his crew.
His people. His inner circle. The wonderful people he's met in his life that have grown to love him, prickles and all.
Leo's medical bills will be staggering. He has health insurance, but it is limited in its scope. Additionally, he will be out of work while he takes many, many months to fight and heal. We have to get in the ring with him.
The money we raise through this campaign will go to help pay for his intensive treatment, medicine, his time away from work as he recovers and for the bare necessities like food and rent.
To know Leo is to know that "charity" is *not* his bag. He holds his head too high. But the truth is that he can't do this without you. And he'd never in a million years ask you himself, so we're doing it for him.
