Hi everyone!
My name is Leo Wall. I am 15 years old and attend Energy Institute High School in Houston, Texas. Attending this STEM magnet school has provided me with so many fantastic opportunities, and I am extremely excited about being given the chance to study abroad in Morocco for a full month to experience the culture and learn the Arabic language. Outside of school, I have always been very interested and involved in art, and would love to learn about the history and development of Islamic art and architecture in Morocco. In July of 2017, I will spend a month in Rabat living with a host family and exploring the many wonders that the city, and the rest of Morocco, has to offer.
This trip would provide me with so many amazing learning experiences and greatly impact my art and knowledge of a one-of-a-kind culture. Exploring the country and developing a deep understanding of the Moroccan culture and religion of Islam will greatly affect not only my artistic development, but also my knowledge/ understanding of North African and other Islamic cultures and customs. I will also be given the amazing opportunity to learn Arabic, the 5th most common natively spoken language in the world, which is also the language of Islam. By studying abroad and learning the Arabic language, I will earn 4 college credits.
The trip includes:
-Visiting the Museum Mohamed VI of Modern and Contemporary Art
-Visits to Tangier, Asilah, Meknes, Walili, and Chefchaouen
-Learning to prepare local dishes
With the language emersion program, I will learn Modern Standard Arabic and colloquial Arabic and walk away from the course with:
-A Certificate of Learning in Arabic
-A Language portfolio for college applications
-4 college credits
With your help to reach my goal, I would be able to pay for:
-Airfare
-Tuition for the program (which includes housing, food, and most other expenses)
-College credit tuition
-Spending money
