Laura's PR Hurricane Response

Donation protected
I know many of us have heard about the lack of support Puerto Rico received from the US government after Hurricane Maria hit. The island is still in very poor shape and they are struggling to receive the support they need to rebuild. I will be going to Barranquitas, Puerto Rico for a week in April to aid in the hurricane Maria response efforts being led by All Hands and Hearts. Although they will be providing me with shelter and meals, volunteers are responsible for travel costs and personal equipment (workboots, outdoor gear, mosquito net/protection). I would be honored to have your support in the form of donations to help with these costs. Any and all help is wonderful. Thank you so much!

Donations above these costs will go directly to All Hands and Hearts to help them continue their program, which you can read about below!

HURRICANE MARIA
Hurricane Maria is regarded as the worst natural disaster on record in Puerto Rico. The tenth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record and the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide of 2017. Maria was a Category 5 Hurricane which hit Puerto Rico on September 20, causing 499 deaths and catastrophic damage / flooding. The electrical grid was damaged; overall damage is estimated at $94.4 billion. This program is based in the municipality of Barranquitas. Barranquitas is in the central mountainous region of the island and was the fourth most affected area. This area experienced landslides, tornados and flooding from rivers.

PROGRAM DETAILS
Our teams will initially focus on debris removal, mucking and gutting of homes, mold sanitation, roof repair, chainsaw work, minor repair and small demolition work. It has been over four months since Hurricane Maria touched down on Puerto Rico so many homeowners have already mucked and gutted and/or sanitized their own homes for mold. Many homes were built using concrete so mucking and gutting and mold sanitation will look different than in homes built with wood and sheetrock. We are still figuring out what is needed most in the communities we are serving; however, at this time we have been finding mostly roof repair and debris removal needs.
