Last Stand for Wild Salmon

$29,525 of $40,000 goal

Wild salmon feed the trees that make the oxygen we breathe, the whales, cultures, communities and they are disappearing rapidly throughout southern British Columbia.  I am a biologist who has been recording the impact of salmon farm disease on wild salmon and whales here for the past 22 years.  Today, indigenous nations are drawing the line to protect the fragile state of wild salmon in the Broughton Archipelago and I am standing with them to help government do the right thing and get the salmon farming industry out of the ocean before its too late.  You can learn more here: http://alexandramorton.typepad.com

I need funds for fuel, supplies, legal fees and communications.

We are making progress! The BC government is meeting with First Nation leadership tomorrow on the issue of whether to renew fish farm tenures that are expiring, other nations are serving eviction notices to the salmon farming industry, Washington State is voting on whether to remove the industry from their waters in the next few days. But young wild salmon are about to leave their natal streams and face lethal sea louse infection as the pass all the farms. There are so few wild salmon left in the intensively farmed regions of this coast that this spring is going to be critical to their survival. Tired as we are all getting of this issue, it is critical not to let up now as we very close to saving salmon. Thank you all, the funds to date have been used to fund the legal actions, front line supplies and to keep the proverbial wolf from my door. I am grateful to each of you.

Late last year Marine Harvest and Cermaq won an injunction against First Nations peacefully occupying salmon farms. These companies are forcing indigenous people to accept salmon farms - like it or not. I published a paper on the spread of piscine reovirus, a Norwegian, salmon blood virus in wild salmon of British Columbia. The federal Minister of Fisheries is fighting me in court to make it legal for infected farm salmon to continue to enter BC marine waters. So what now? Premier of BC, John Horgan has a big decision: is he going to renew the farm salmon tenures in Musgamagw/Namgis territory or not? Is he going to expose these wild salmon to piscine reovirus or not? This is the moment we, as people on this beautiful planet, decide whether wild salmon are permitted to survive us or not.

The world has now seen the images of farm salmon blood, infected with piscine reovirus and carrying intestinal worms pouring into BC's wild salmon migration routes. And yet the Minister of Fisheries Dominic LeBlanc is fighting me in court to make it legal for the industry to raise infected fish in fish farms throughout BC. He has ignored the First Nations occupying salmon farms for the past 100 days and time is running out for the last wild salmon incubating in the gravel of rivers near salmon farms. Will these fish be eaten by sea lice and exposed to the farm salmon viruses? Please consider donating to keep me in this fight.

The salmon farming supporters are now directing their brute force at Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham who has made an incredibly brave stand for wild salmon and indigenous rights. Please support those of us on the front lines! If we are not standing on the farms, the fight for wild salmon will sputter out and fail. It is the season of high winds and rain and we need your help!
