Now our amazing piece will be a part of the Sanctuary series at HERE Arts, Brown University (March 3rd, 2017) and Lukumi Arts will be presenting workshops and other community events at Yale University (Feb. 8th, 2017) this Spring! SANCTUARY Presents: La Sirene at Sanctuary
For this 2017, we will kickoff the year of ever changing politics at the end of the Obama era and beginnings of a Trump Presidency. We have updated our La Sirene sound and video performance based on our first version of La Sirene: Rutas de Azucar that we presented at JACK Dec.1-4th, 2016. New times call for new things as the thaw between Cuba and the U.S. continues, singer/performer Jadele McPherson considers Afro-Cuban and Haitian contributions to the Afro-Atlantic. She creates a musical and theatrical bridge connecting the Cuban-American experience of today with black liberation figures, conjurers and spiritual leaders from two hundred years ago. Scenes of a young Cuban-American woman discovering her own rebellious ancestry are swallowed by music, dance and ritual featuring some of the great dance and music artists this city has to offer, many coming out of African-American, Cuban and Haitian traditions, featuring Jadele McPherson, Val Jeanty, Nathalie Guillaume, Maxine Montilus, Hansell Vaillant, Yomaira Gonzalez, Miguelo Valdes, Dayan Ogbelara, and Charles Hart. Themes of black resistance – both historical and contemporary – swell in this colorful and immersive spectacle.
La Sirene: Rutas de Azucar (loose translation: “Black Mermaid: Sugar Routes”) takes as its inspiration Cuban revolutionary José Antonio Aponte's libro de pinturas, a book of paintings of black heroes that served as a catalyst for an attempted rebellion against colonists.
