Medical expenses for Larry Bush

Donation protected
Dear friends,
On Wednesday August 24, Larry had what we thought would be a standard hernia repair surgery up the Florida coast here at BayMedical hospital in Panama City, over an hour from our home in Port Saint Joe. Unfortunately over the course of the next few days at home Larrys Heath steadily deteriorated so on Monday August 29 I took him back to BayMedical in Panama City. At first we went to the ER and the first thing that was said is that he appeared "septic" over the course of the next couple hours many test and procedures were preformed on him. Soon they moved him to the ICU, because his kidneys and liver were failing and he would need surgery to see what done to save him.

His surgeon took him into the operating room at 8pm and his surgery lasted nearly 7 hours. It was the longest 7hours of my life, as I spent much time praying and pacing. When the surgeon came out she told me he was severely ill, because 1) he had flesh eating bacteria present where the hernia repair mesh and stitches were placed, and 2) it infected his bowl-colon and abdominal wall some of which had to be removed, 3) he had to remain on the ventilator and in an induced coma for the time being. He appeared to have gotten septic due to a reaction to the stiches and mesh used for the hernia repair. His surgeon at this time also explained that he could not be closed at this time due to her removing a portion of his abdomen wall. They basically used surgical "Saran Wrap" to cover the large abdomen opening.

At this time I was told to prepare for the worst. If Larry was stable enough on the 31 of August he would be taken back to the OR. He made it and we went back to OR he at that time lost more of his bowl - colon and now has a ileostomy bag, she also removed more of the abdomen wall due to the flesh eating bacteria. At this point she determined that he would remain open with a surgical wrap.

Over the course of the next 12 days Larry would undergo 6 more surgical procedures to control the flesh eating bacteria and he unfortunately Ended up with a small fistula. He is now off the ventilator and still in ICU but not out of danger yet. We need your prayers to help heal him and his road road to recovery is going to be long and difficult.

His surgeon has told us to expect to be in the hospital for the next 2 months, and wound care for the next 9-10 months. She has also indicated that it will be a year and a half for recovery and then 2 years possibly before the ileostomy can be reversed. In addition to this ordeal my Heath has been challenging but not as serious as Larry.

Earlier this summer when my gallbladder was removed, they preformed a liver biopsy. The surgeon could see that my bile ducts were dying and that my over all liver did not look heathy. The biopsy came back with necrosis of the liver and bile ducts. I have since been given a name for what is going on, autoimmune hepitis. It has been determined that I will need care at John Hopkins as soon as Larry is stable enough. The goal is to put the hepitis into remission by killing my immune system. They will also need to repair my bile ducts by stints to open them up to buy us some time before a full liver transplant is needed. I will have my first appointment September 26, as long as Larry is well enough for me to go.

As you can imagine our family has had tremendous expenses for medical care, food- lodging up here in Panama City away from our home. These expenses will continue for months as we work our way thru these many difficult challenges.

Nevertheless, I know that God has us in his hands and we will get thru all of this.

At the urging of several dear friends we are setting up this page to help us with these significant cost. Our friends also in the Gulf County Sheriffs office plan to have a fundraiser for him the second week of October. So if you can help us you have this outlet or you can send a donation in the name of Larry Bush to the Gulf County Sheriffs Department and they will make sure our family revives it. Most of all we just ask for your prayers for our family and know that all is deeply appreciated.
Thank you,
Veronica Bush
