Running for Tony Nye

Donation protected
My dad and I are running 10k in the Bournemouth Marathon Festival, in aid of Tony Nye; we want to be able to raise enough money to send him and his wife away for night in a hotel for a well-deserved break. Tony is my dad’s cousin and he was diagnosed a few years ago with Cervical Spinal Stenosis with Myelopathy normally found in patients over 60 years of age.

What is Cervical Spinal Stenosis with Myelopathy?

Cervical stenosis is a slowly progressive condition that pinches the spinal cord in the neck. Cervical myelopathy refers to this compression of the cervical spinal cord as a result of spinal stenosis. Cervical spinal stenosis with myelopathy is more common in elderly patients.

People with cervical stenosis with myelopathy may note one or more of the following spinal stenosis symptoms:

*Heavy feeling in the legs
*Inability to walk at a brisk pace
*Deterioration in fine motor skills (such as handwriting or buttoning a shirt)
*Intermittent shooting pains into the arms and legs (like an electrical shock), especially when bending their head forward (known as Lermitte’s phenomenon)
*Arm pain (cervical radiculopathy).

Tony was a bus driver and has always worked hard, he has a wife, two children and 3 grandchildren. This diagnosis has changed his life completely, he can no longer work and struggles to play with his grandchildren. His wife Julia has confessed it really is a struggle especially with her working full time.

Tony was always full of life and still is but now very limited, back in the day he played football for Christchurch Dukes with my dad, he was fit and loved to play although he spent most of his time on the floor ‘injured’ also known as resting!! A few years back the ‘old boys’ got back together to play the younger players but  this is no longer possible for him.

When dad told me Tony was ill I didn’t realise how much it had changed his life until he walked into the pub with a walking stick, I was completely shocked, however he hasn’t spent his time dwelling on his condition and hated that he couldn’t work, so he became a volunteer.

Tony spends his days at the Christchurch Macmillan Unit, where he spends time with the patients; he chats with them, listens to them and makes sure they are comfortable.

Tony isn’t the type of man to complain or ask for help but we believe he and his wife deserve a break even if it just for one night to relax and spend time together.
