Youn Malual moved himself and his family from East Africa to the United States in June of 2005.  After settling in Denver, Colorado, Youn and his wife Mary Kuanen (in their wedding photo above) worked hard to pass the United States citizenship test and to support their five children, Nyagai (in the picture with her mother, Mary, above), Monyindi, Bang, Malual, and Emmanuel (all together in the above photo of the young men in the family) in their newly adopted county.

Tragically, Youn’s life was taken as he returned home from work at 3:10 in the morning of December 26th, 2011.  Youn was killed in a case of mistaken identity. After a great deal of time spent in court, Mary has seen three men sentenced for life for the murder of her husband.  This is the subject of the 5280 (a Denver periodical) story, "Awake in the Night," in the December 2016 issue, available at: http://www.5280.com/2016/11/awake-in-the-night/.

Although the legal proceedings have now ended for the Kuanen/Malual family, this tragic loss is still felt by the family both emotionally and economically as Mary, a preschool aide at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, is the main wage earner for the family.  Please join us in making a contribution to help pay for the college education for Mary’s five children through this GoFundMe page.  All funds collected will be distributed equally to five 529 CollegeInvest plans for Monyindi, Nyagai, Bang, Malual, and Emmanuel.  This campaign’s goal is to raise $125,000, enough to pay for one year of in-state tuition and residence at any of Colorado’s public universities for each of Mary’s five children.

Malual Malual, Youn and Mary's second to last child, is the Cub Scout on the left in the photo, standing next to Dave Pilarowski’s son, Liam, at their Cub Scout campout/Air Force Academy Football game weekend. Brenda and Chris Case’s oldest son, Cash, is a classmate and basketball teammate of Malual’s at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School. Megan Honig taught Malual’s older brother, Bang, as a fourth grader at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School. Together, these friends of the Kuanen/Malual family have organized this fundraising effort for the family's continued education and thank you for your heartfelt gift.

Monyindi, the oldest of the siblings, is currently studying to be a pharmacist. Nyagai is taking criminal justice classes and would like to be an investigator.  Bang would like to take aerospace engineering classes when he is old enough for college and then become an astronaut.  The youngest of Mary’s children, Malual and Emmanuel, would both like to become police officers.
