Ria's 2nd Chance Journey!

Donation protected
In May 2009 a chestnut Thoroughbred filly  was born. She was named Selleria but known by her barn name Princess Ria. Kentucky bred, she came with an impressive pedigree. Her mother was She's Mahogany, who was sired by Woodman.  Her father was Van Nistelrooy, who was sired by Storm Cat.

Princess Ria was sold at the 2010 Keeneland Sale for $24,000. She was then raced in California at several tracks winning . . Her last race was in September of 2013.

Five short months later, Ria showed up in the loose horse pens at the Hermiston Auction frequented by kill buyers, where REIN (Rescuing Equines In Need) volunteers saw that she was being attacked by group of more dominate mares. They also noticed  both her front feet were wrapped.

A short time after that Ria went down in the pen. Despite the help of a few horses trying to protect her, the more dominant horses continued to attack her. REIN informed the auction staff of her situation and were told that the staff was to busy to do anything. REIN volunteers took it upon themselves and moved her to another pen.

The morning of the auction they found Ria shivering and completely covered in mud. REIN purchased Ria for $.08 a lb for a grand total of $79.60.

REIN pulled the bandages off her feet andwere shocked to see what was under the wraps. They made the decision to rewrap and pack her feet and haul her home to be evaluated by the vet. On the way home they stopped to check on her and she actually appeared happier and the next morning they were met with a nicker.

Ria had a long road ahead of her,  and so did her saviors. April Wolf of The Savvy Hoof spent countless hours working on her feet and bringing her back to health. Thank you April for all your dedication to Princess Ria.

Ria beat the odds and recovered. She was now ready for the next step of her life tobegun. A REIN volunteer contacted me to see if I would be interested in looking at her for the Thoroughbred Makeover. She told me about her history, and to say the least I was a tad bit concerned. I was also intrigued because--as many of you know--rescue horses are where my heart lies.

After a whirlwind of messaging back and forth, it was decided I would go get her on Monday afternoon and bring her back to have her vet checked and x-rayed. I was really concerned as to whether she could hold up to the stress of training and travel. I would never want her to be back in the pain that she has experienced. I drove up picked her up, stopped in Ridgefield for a long lining lesson, and then arrived back home at 10:00 p.m. Ria handled all of it very well.

She had a lameness exam and x-rays on Tuesday and considering her history she is in pretty good shape.

So I have officially decided to adopt her and we will begin our journey to Lexington, Kentucky.

The road to Lexington, Kentucky, will be a challenging nine-month journey with many expenses.  I need help covering costs such as shoeing, entries to local competitions to prepare her for Kentucky, veterinary care, supplements, and travel expenses to the event (4800 miles round trip).  Thank you for allowing me to give Ria the chance she deserves.
