Growing lives through a good book

Currently, across the country, our students are in a literacy crisis. There have been a number of reading initiatives aimed at improving the reading levels and scores of middle school students – most have been met with mixed results. Overwhelmingly, what teachers and families are noticing is that students are able to decode and read the words on the page but struggle with comprehension as texts become increasingly difficult. Statistics for Title 1 schools like ours are even more grave. Middle School readers need extended time with texts in every subject and this begins with immediate access to books in all areas.
  
At Tulsa Legacy Charter School, we are determined to change the game for our students. Currently in our founding year, we opened to serve students in grades 4-7. Our students are eager to learn and motivated by the idea of graduating from college and creating a life for themselves.  Our students, however, do not have the adequate access to books that will push their learning and prepare them to be successful in college and in life. Our school’s library shelves are nearly bare and the walls lack flavor and resource. We are looking to raise money to fill our library with posters, resources, and books that play to all interests so that our students have a constant opportunity to engage in reading both inside and outside of their classroom.
