More details on our fundraising drive below:

The proposed school extension is a big step in the life of Holy Family N.S. Killeen. Let us give you a little bit of background history:
The school was established in 1975 to replace a number of smaller schools which had already closed or were due to close- Thallabawn, Killadoon, Carrownisky and Cregganbawn. It began its life on a bleak, barren windswept piece of ground but thanks to the vision of its founders and the hard work of succeeding generations of parents, staff and community it has developed onto a very successful and happy centre of learning.

Its location on a link road means that it is a convenient and safe place for dropping off and picking up pupils. It is a substantial site which means the proposed development will not encroach unduly on the play areas.

Special commendation must go to the board and parents who sowed and nurtured a shelter belt on the south and west side of the school-vital protection against the gales from Mweelra and the Atlantic. Credit likewise to those who drained and developed the football pitch at the back of the school- much prized and appreciated by the pupils.

Many other developments have taken place over the years, the development of a basketball court and a small school garden to encourage children in the appreciation of the fruits and beauty of nature.

The setting up of Killeen School and Community Lotto is another example of the long track record of commitment to the school by the parents and the wider community. It generates a steady income stream which helps provide extra equipment for the children and subsidise travel expenses when pupils participate in out of school sporting or cultural activities.

This year we opened our 'Sunbeams' Class - a special class for children with multiple disabilities. This class aims to offer an interactive and specific learning environment within a mainstream, co-educational national school for children who would otherwise have to travel long distances to attend a Special School. At the moment we are operating our special class out of one of the existing mainstream classrooms. In terms of equipment and space, this is entirely unsuitable and doesn't afford the children with the learning environment they deserve.

The Department of Education have allocated us a grant to build an extension to facilitate this special class. There is a significant shortfall between the grant received from the Department and the cost of the building work that is necessary to upgrade the facilities at the school.

We must now undertake a mammoth fundraising drive to reach the required funds. We are calling upon the generosity of the local and wider community, past pupils near and far, extended family members, businesses etc. to help us provide the learning facility that the pupils deserve.

We in Killeen are very proud of our school and we are confident that the provision of this extension will enjoy the same level of support as previous projects have.
