My niece Liana Kuhia Arakaki & Lono have decided to temporarily relocate their family from Hawaiʻi to Palto, California to be a "Liver Donor" for their nephew Kanoa Manners.
At two months after Kanoa was born, he was diagnosed with “Biliary Atresia”. A rare disease of the liver & bile ducts. The bile ducts become inflamed & blocked which causes the bile (waste) to remain in the liver. Without bile excretion, the liver becomes damaged. The only treatment for Biliary Atresia is a surgical procedure called the “Kasai” procedure (allow bile drainage) which was performed on him at two months old. Since then, Kanoa has gone thru numerous doctor visits, hospital stays, laboratory tests and procedures. Received antibiotic treatments & albumin transfusions. He takes daily medications to prevent infections. The family recently learned that little Kanoa’s liver is slowly failing & the only other option is a liver transplant. Unfortunately, both his parents are not a match & they are unable to give a piece of their liver to help save his life.
Miraculously my nieces blood type is O & she is a match to donate a piece of her liver to Kanoa. Their surgery is schedule to take place this coming March 2016, at Stanford Health Care. The healthy liver should regenerate in Kanoa & Kuhia within 6 to 8 weeks & the recovery will be several months to a year. They will be closely monitored & they will visit their doctors in California repeatedly to determine if their livers are regenerating.
Your support will be helpful to subsidize some of their medical expenses, relocating cost such as airfare, ground trasportation, rent, food and other living expenses while they are living in California.
