$500 of $1,200 goal

Dear friends, family, and kind patrons-

I am Joseph Dubner a Life Scout and I’m about to start my Eagle Scout Project for the Boy Scouts of America. My project is for Rockland Lake State Park, where some of you may frequent regularly. My project will focus on helping the local ecosystems and making it a better place for its native inhabitants and the many people who go there to enjoy it. This project is more than a service project to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout. The preservation and study of aquatic ecosystems, is a passion of mine, which I intend to pursue in my college career and beyond.

The first part of my project will involve the removal of an invasive species of reeds called Phragmites from a pond on the Championship Golf Course. Without proper care, these reeds could spread downstream and wreak havoc on the wildlife that inhabits the area around Rockland Lake. We will be removing it in a fashion such that they will refrain from regrowing. The other part is the introduction of Triploid Grass Carp into the large irrigation pond between the course and the lake. The fish will help to control the rampant duckweed that infests the pond every year and strains the wildlife which the park services try so hard to protect. On top of that, I will also be putting two benches in front of the irrigation pond for park-goers to enjoy the diversity of wildlife that the pond helps support, as well as a plaque that will tell of what the park service and I have done to help keep the park a refuge for all kinds of wildlife.

Unfortunately unless it rains fish (and benches), outside funds are necessary do this project. The fish along with the benches and plaque are fairly expensive. I’m reaching out to everyone to help raise funds needed to start this project. Any amount is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance for your generosity. All of the money is going towards a great cause. Should there be any remaining funds raised, it will go to the NYS Parks Department (a not-for-profit agency).

Below are some images of the the ponds and and their individual infestations. The first one shows the pond infested with phragmites, reaching over 10 feet tall. The second one is a view of the extensive growth of duckweed algae, covering the top of the drainage pond.

Hello, Joe here. I am so very grateful for the donations you had made on behalf of my project. The 1st phase is almost completed. I could sure use some more help to complete this and then phase 2 in April/May. Remember, your donations are completely for the expenses, which will lead to an environmentally sound ecosystem for one of NY's small, but fantastic state parks. Thank you! Joe
