My name is Lindy McHenry and I've wanted to open a foster closet since we brought our first foster love home from the hospital 2 years ago.
His arrival came with the sudden realization that within 4 hours of getting the call we had a newborn in our arms and no diapers at home!
Our "village" pulled together and we had everything we needed within the first few days of his stay. During this time I found myself thinking "there's... got to be a better way to support these children." After a quick google search I stumbled across the idea of a foster closet.
I'm sure you're wondering what a Foster Closet is, well let me tell you!
The Johnson County Foster Closet is a place foster parents can turn to for help. Often children in foster care come into their new foster homes with little to no personal belongings. A lot of us would find it hard to go out and purchase an entire wardrobe, backpack, baby supplies etc. in one shopping trip. That's where we can step in and fill the need.
The Johnson County Foster Closet can provide these families with new or gently used clothing, shoes, and other needs to help these children find a sense of comfort among the chaos.
When a child is placed in a new foster home their foster parents can contact me and let me know what is needed. I can then put together a care package for that child from the donations I have on hand or send out a donation request for a specific need.
I will then set up a pick up time with the family or schedule a time to drop the package off at their home.
In order to do this I am hoping to raise enough money to cover my start up cost.
Donated money will go towards buying storage totes to keep items organized, supplies to build shelving , and towards filing for a 501 3c status.
All donations are NOT TAX DEDUCTIBLE at this time.
